Interested in a Plot? Let’s Walk First.
Before planting in your own garden bed, we believe it’s important to plant roots in the community first. At The Neighborhood Garden Project, we invite individuals and families into something more than just gardening. It’s a shared journey—built on trust, healing, and being known.
Instead of jumping right into reserving a plot, we begin by spending time together in the garden. We ask for 10 hours of presence—not to earn your spot, but to give us time to walk with you. These hours can be scheduled when it works for you and give us space to build relationship before anything goes in the ground.
Ten hours is the first step. Once completed, the Garden Manager will discern whether you're ready to steward a plot—or if a season of deeper, one-on-one learning would be more fruitful. That next step includes hands-on training in foundational skills like seeding, transplanting, cultivating soil, weed and pest identification and management, seasonal planting rhythms, and more. It’s not about perfection—it’s about preparation. We want every grower to feel confident, equipped, and supported before taking ownership of their own space.
We’ve learned that when we give space too quickly, people often miss what the garden is really about. But when we take time first, the garden becomes more than just a place to grow food—it becomes a place where people grow, too.
