January 2025 Newsletter
Reflections…
In 2024, The Neighborhood Garden Project and the local community experienced remarkable growth. Throughout the year, we cultivated not only the garden but also valuable relationships that positively impacted many lives. We are deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to the project by offering their time, resources, and generous donations. Your support has made a significant difference in our efforts to enrich the community.
Preparing for Spring!!
Houston winters can be quite unpredictable, with notable fluctuations in temperature and sporadic weather patterns. January typically brings cooler temperatures, but it's not uncommon to experience a mix of chilly, damp days alongside unexpected warm spells that can feel almost spring-like. This variability keeps everyone guessing and longing for the arrival of spring.
As January progresses, the days begin to lengthen, bringing us closer to spring. This gradual transition is marked by an increase in sunlight, which prompts us to reflect on our gardening plans and prepare our plots. The extended daylight encourages community members to engage with their gardens, igniting excitement for the upcoming growing season. With the promise of warmer days on the horizon, we start preparing for spring planting, focusing on soil preparation and seed selection. These lengthening days remind us that, despite the unpredictable winter weather, the vitality of spring is just around the corner, fostering a renewed sense of hope and activity in the community.
Lastly, undoubtedly, one of the most coveted summer crops is the delicious and versatile tomato. Given its finicky growing nature and the long days-to-harvest, the anticipation and excitement leading up to the first harvest of a perfectly ripe and juicy tomato is a reward that makes all the effort and hard work worthwhile. You won’t want to miss it.
Meet a Volunteer of TNGP
During her youth, Tonya spent many summers with her grandmother, who was passionate about gardening. Her grandmother's love for plants and nature greatly influenced Tonya, fostering her own appreciation for them. To deepen her knowledge, Tonya began volunteering, dedicating her time to a worthwhile cause. Each volunteer experience has been enjoyable and filled with valuable learning opportunities. She eagerly looks forward to many more volunteer experiences in the future.
Looking Ahead…
As we move into 2025, The Neighborhood Garden Project's commitment to sowing seeds of change remains unwavering, and we are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. With a renewed focus on community engagement, sustainable practices, and educational initiatives, we anticipate another fruitful year. TNGP will continue to work to cultivate the gardens and relationships that foster resilience within our neighborhoods. We will continue to nurture the transformative power of gardening, ensuring our collective efforts yield lasting benefits for years to come.
Let’s keep it growing!!
